In Portugal, Train Drivers Begin Rush-Hour Strikes
By ASSOCIATED PRESS
A morning rush-hour strike by train drivers caused widespread travel disruption in Portugal on Monday as the workers protested a government pay freeze at publicly owned companies.
About one in four of the national rail company’s scheduled services ran during the five hours of the walkout, the Train Engineers Union said. All intercity services and most suburban commuter trains were canceled.
The drivers are to repeat their actions on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Bus divers, meanwhile, plan a 24- hour strike Tuesday, and postal workers are preparing for stoppages this week.
